PowerD one of the greenest energy suppliers in the Netherlands

December 22, 2021

Natuur & Milieu, the Consumers' Association, WISE and Greenpeace surveyed the green credentials of 41 energy suppliers, and PowerD scored a 9.9

Amsterdam - The startup PowerD has won several awards over the past year and was presented with the Automotive Innovation Award by Jan-Peter Balkenende for their contribution to innovation in the automotive industry. The young company (2019) supplies smart charging stations - mainly to companies with large fleets - that use smart algorithms to ensure that the car is charged with green energy when it is most economically available. This ensures sustainability, greening and also reduces the pressure on the overloaded electricity grid. With its charging solutions, the company primarily targets leasing companies, real estate developers, carriers and retailers. The company can make the biggest difference there - in its own words - because they reach large group of end users. The startup's mission is to help companies achieve their green sustainability goals and thus contribute to meeting the 2030 climate goals.

The annual Dutch Electricity Suppliers Sustainability Survey was compiled by the Consumers' Association, Natuur & Milieu and WISE. With the study, the organizations want to increase the transparency of the energy market, properly inform consumers and encourage Dutch power suppliers to make sustainable choices. The Consumers' Association published the list of the greenest and most sustainable power suppliers for consumers and end users in December 2021. The energy that PowerD supplies - through partner Energy Zero - to lease drivers, residents of new construction projects and other end users was rated with a 9.9. This puts them just outside the top five companies supplying the greenest energy.

Improvement is in our DNA

Pieter Willems co-founder of PowerD is happy with the 6th place, "It is a confirmation that our partnership with Energy Zero was the right choice. To finish in 6th place - out of a total of 41 companies - is promising. But in our company DNA is acquire that we always strive to improve. That's why we want to finish in the top 3 next year. We hope that other companies strive just as hard to become greener, because currently we - as a society - are lagging behind in achieving the climate goals."

Proven proposition

In 2020, together with Leasplan as a launching customer, PowerD launched a user platform under the name LeasePlan Energy. With this, the leasing company wants to compete with parties already active in the 'smart charging' market. Oscar Westerhof states: "In the coming period we will focus on smart energy applications from the grid operator, employer, energy supplier and charge point operator, to ultimately ensure a simple integration of energy and mobility."

Investment Round

The company has international ambitions but first wants to further conquer the Netherlands. "We are working on an investment round to accelerate the Dutch rollout. There are European expansion plans but we want to solve the problems in the Netherlands first. There is still a lot of work to do.There is a glaring shortage of charging stations, the electricity grid is getting overloaded and the increase in the additional tax on electric cars is going up in 2022, so plenty of challenge for 2022 ."
